Is Adoption Right for Me?
Only you can decide if adoption is the right choice for your pregnancy. But learning all you can about adoption will help you decide.
What Should I Know About Adoption?
Adoption is a choice full of options, depending on what you desire and feel comfortable with.
When you choose adoption, you will work with an adoption agency to define the details of your adoption plan. While adoption plans are unique, they generally fall into one of three categories:
- Open adoption: If you want to choose the adoptive family and have open communication between you, the adoptive family, and the child, this choice is for you.
- Semi-open adoption: You can choose the family and meet with them, similar to open adoption, but no identifying information is shared. You can communicate with the adoptive family through apps or via the adoption agency.
- Closed adoption: This is the most restrictive adoption plan. With closed adoption, you and the adoptive family won’t know anything about each other, and there will be no communication.
Whichever option you choose, you may change the level of communication at any point. At cfsfl.org, we expect waiting adoptive families to be open to communication as this benefits all involved.
Asking Questions Can Help
When trying to decide whether adoption is right for you, asking yourself the following questions can help:
- Do I know all I can about each of my options? If not, what questions do I still have?
- What might my life look like if I choose adoption?
- How might I feel if I choose adoption?
