How can you, as an expectant mother with an unplanned pregnancy, choose to place your baby with an adoptive family?
Choosing who will parent your child may seem frightening. Consider what is required of Adoption in Florida from Statute 63, and you will see that adoption agencies in Florida must abide by regulations which can assure you, to the best of an agency’s knowledge, that your child is placed in a SAFE and loving home.
Each CFS waiting adoptive family has a valid Home Study. A Home Study is written by an Adoption Case Worker (a licensed professional or a case worker working with a licensed agency). We require two in home visits before the Home Study is approved.
To begin the adoption process, letters of recommendation are requested from the prospective family’s friends, leaders in their church home, and their employers. Once we have these items, Christian Family Service staff asks the couple for several other items. Home Studies require families to share information about their history as children and adults.
Hopeful adoptive families provide annual physicals to their Adoption Case Worker to show they are healthy and able to raise a child. They provide their financial details, to show they are capable of providing for a child. They are fingerprinted and their criminal history is reviewed on a local and national level. If there are any concerns, they are discussed and addressed in the Home Study for the court.
Once a Home Study is written and approved, it must be updated annually until a family receives a newborn into their home for adoption. Adoptive families create a profile book to share with Birth Mothers who are looking for families for their baby.
When you, as a Birth Mother make the brave decision to place your infant for adoption, you can do so knowing what the family is like. If you choose open or semi-open adoption, you can receive regular updates on your baby and their family.
